Sr. Automation Engineer




This Automation Engineer position is responsible for the design, development, installation, and support of automated systems and equipment in support of the manufacturing operations within the Raleigh Imaging Site.  Additionally, this position will develop and execute plans for optimizing process control and instrumentation systems throughout the plant.  The position will help Guerbet continue to achieve excellence as defined by best industry practices.  The position will be responsible for establishing optimum work processes and administrative controls and deploy to the key functions.  The position will provide technical support for a wide variety of instrumentation and control equipment.  This position actively participates as a team member on assigned plant projects.

The Automation Engineer will work with the Project Engineers, Process Engineers, Process Mechanics, Facilities Mechanics and other Operations personnel to make sure that all equipment is designed and managed for maximum utility and Total Cost of Ownership.

The Automation Engineer is a "hands on" role.  This position will work with little or no supervision, applying scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to the support of automated systems and equipment in the manufacturing environment and serve as the key technical resource for automated systems focusing on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and problem resolution for electronic/mechanical equipment issues.  This position also plays a key role in continuous improvement and operational excellence.




  1. Perform programming and troubleshooting for distributed control systems and PLCs.
  2. Perform tasks per Standard Operating Procedures and update as needed.
  3. Develop and review electrical and other drawings in support of plant processes.
  4. Communicate ideas and concerns effectively in working with team members.
  5. Comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPS).
  6. Manage historical production data in accordance with cGMPs.
  7. Works with internal customer and implementation resources to meet project requirements.
  8. Develop scope of work for Automation/Instrument and Controls system, networks and projects.
  9. Identify end user training needs for technologies and products delivered.
  10. Help develop functional design documents for DCS/PLC architectures.
  11. Guide the development of, or reviews of, P&IDs, One Line Diagrams, Schematics and I/O lists.
  12. Identify and consult with others on solutions to unusual, difficult, or complex tasks.
  13. Document control strategies.
  14. Review control panel designs.
  15. Develop preliminary and final cost estimates.
  16. Work with internal resources for design preferences, HMI graphics design and standard development.
  17. Manage medium to large sized automation projects, monitoring scope, schedule, and budget to the work to the project plan.
  18. Project scheduling through use of project management software (Microsoft Project or other).
  19. Delivers status updates to management, partners and internal resources.
  20. Prioritize and balance competing project demands and conflicting project requirements.
  21. Travel to vendor sites to perform factory acceptance testing for assigned projects.



Required Skills & Background



Education required/ preferred:

BS in Electrical Engineering; Instrumentation and Control Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Chemical Engineering or equivalent (required).


3-5 years in related field.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Experience in programming, maintaining and troubleshooting Distributed Control Systems (Foxboro I/A System preferred) and PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred).

Experience working in a pharmaceutical or regulated industrial environment.


Successful track record in the design and development of industrial automation, instrumentation and control systems.

Self-starter with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Passion for finding better ways, developing and documenting best practices.

Developing, reading and understanding P&IDs and control schematics.

Design and development of industrial communication control networks.

Communicate clearly and concisely in verbal and written communications.

Strong background in standard PC applications.

Project management at the conceptual and detailed level - scope of work, budget and schedule.

Computer validation knowledge.

Other Skills:

Proficiency in MS Office applications.

Basic reading, writing and math skills.

  • Position is responsible for supporting and improving automated equipment.
  • Interacts with Operations, Project Engineering, Facilities, Process Engineering, outside contractors, Quality, Human Resources, and Materials Management departments.




    Normal office conditions but will spend significant time on the production floor and facilities/utilities area.
